There is a lot of talk about finding your niche. But the first question from those beginning Internet Marketing often is, “What is a niche?”
A niche is just a market that is specialized with people (hopefully buyers) who share a common interest.
In the broadest sense this would be something like “Travel”. Yes, this is a niche but is far too large for you to be able to write about and get it to rank high in searches. I just searched in Google for travel and came up with 3,850,000,000 searches. The top ten were all large companies like Expedia Travel, Kayak, Priceline, Orbitz and so forth. Not much chance of beating them out for a top spot.
But if I go to Kid Friendly Travel, I get 10,400,000. Still a huge number and those kinds of numbers mean high competition. Put the search in speech marks (quotation marks “ “) This means that all of the words will be in that order. The number comes down to 1, 050,000. Still pretty high for me to undertake. Let’s try again. “Kid Friendly Travel Destinations” – 112,000 But change it to “Child Friendly Travel Destinations” and you get 42,600.
Now, all of that was not meant to send you hurrying away. We will study searches and competition later. But that is what is called drilling down in a niche. All of those are niches and all are answers to “What is a niche”.
This is usually panic time if you are just beginning internet marketing. “I don’t want to be tied to this niche market forever.” It’s too stressful to make a decision so the decision is to put off making the choice — procrastinate, procrastinate, procrastinate. Of course you are afraid the market could fail and not be profitable.
Look at it this way. You can start out by looking into something you know or something you don’t know. Many will say that interest doesn’t matter — just go where the money is. For some that may be true and for others it may be true later on in your internet career.
No doubt you will want to develop several niches as you develop your different sources of income. But you definitely need to start with just one. I believe that the beginner needs to start with something known and about which they are passionate. Use this passion to your advantage as you learn the technical skills of the diverse sides of internet marketing without worrying about doing too much content research.
More and more people are leaning toward starting out with a blog. Again my opinion, this is a good idea. It allows you to get started without as many skills at the start. You can learn more complex things as you go along.
I hope this answers your questions about niches and now you could answer someone’s question, “What is a niche market?” With this introduction, we are going to move on to the next step in our process by determining a niche for you.
